The neighbourhood of Garneau is one of Edmonton’s finest legacy neighbourhoods. This area has a rich history and great purpose for the City of Edmonton. Garneau got its name from a Metis man named Laurent Garneau who was a follower of Louis Riel and fought in the 1869 Red River Rebellion. Garneau owned a plot of land called River Lot 7 referred to as “The Garneau”.
Later on, when the University of Alberta opened, many of the University’s staff built homes in Garneau. This area became a popular neighbourhood that saw a quick jump in development. Several prominent people, such as the architect for Pembina Hall, Professor Cecil Burgess, have made Garneau their home since it was popularized in 1908. The famous professor lived at 10958-89 Avenue. In addition, in 1912 Emily Murphy, one of Canada’s famous five, lived at 11011-88 Avenue.
